Tangos del Alma is a lively, instrumental tangos flamenco that Berto wrote inspired by the beauty and ferocity of the flamenco style.
Berto fell in love with flamenco music when he first heard a recording of Paco de Lucia playing guitar at age 11. He was just learning to play the guitar himself and this inspiration has stayed with him to this day.
He later discovered artists such as Vicente Amigo, Tomatito and Gerardo Nunez. Each have influenced his playing in a unique way. Berto wrote our new release, “Tangos del Alma” (Tangos from the Soul) after feeling inspired by Vicente Amigo’s incredible groove and beautiful melodies. “He makes the guitar sing as though it were human. It is clearly an extension of himself as the artist.”
“Tangos del Alma” is a lively instrumental tangos flamenco. The rhythm is driven by cajon, palmas, and Berto’s vocal percussion. His lifelong love and study of Spanish guitar shine through.
The Muse Awakens is about that beautiful awakening that happens in a dancers spirit and body when she becomes inspired by the music.
It begins with a gorgeous guitar intro and transforms into a Spanish flamenco tangos. May it transport you to a world of mystery and wonder.
Lyrics:
Softly the muse awakens
A rush of sunlight inside her soul
Eyes gleam a distant knowing
A timeless stirring deep in her bones
Listening to the felt sensations
Whispering to her fingertips
Echoes of ancient waters
Her body sings a melody
She dreams inside this waking
Her body shaking upon the call
A peace, respite from longing
The spirit moving beyond the wall

Music has the power to move us, inspire us, transform our emotional state, reinforce messages that we need at different moments of our lives.
Feeling fully alive, present and connected to the world is precious.
“When You’re Awake” celebrates this ephemeral feeling. Appreciating the wonder and magic of light filtering through the trees or a freshly fallen snow are messages I sing to myself to remind me to be present and FEEL the simple, amazing moments in this world.

We had a lot of fun arranging this original tune. It’s named after two of our favorite Brazilian rhythms . . . in the title.
Madeline created the melody as a vocalese and Berto really shines with his Brazilian rhythm fingerpicking on this
one. Listen closely for his vocal percussion! We hope you enjoy that inner tickle as much as we do :)
“I’ve got that warm, ticklin’ feelin’. I really feel that I could fly.”
We’re so excited to share a new arrangement and recording of our song - ‘Sunshine on a Saturday’.
Originally recorded as a funky blues, Berto was interested in breathing new life into it.
He re-harmonized (i.e. changed and added a bunch of chords ‘cause he just can’t help it :) and shifted the rhythm to samba. And we were lucky enough to record with the Lucini brothers (Leo and Alejandro, both from Rio de Janeiro but living in the US) on bass and drums.
Madeline wrote the song about Berto over 10 years ago and it still feels true :)
“Wakin’ up with you is like sunshine on a Saturday . . . I’m feelin’ warm and free right down to the very tips of my toes”
‘Love Where You Are’ came from an internal longing to feel settled and at ease. planted. rooted. connected. filled with a sense of belonging to the people and place where I live.
I’d ‘learned’ through mindfulness studies that happiness only exists in the present moment.
The problem was that I was restless and leaning forward most of the time.
So I started day dreaming about how my surroundings might gently infuse me with this sense of ease, of rightness of being, of the capacity to feel spacious, open, grounded and free.
And it was here all along. The color and vibrance of the spring and fall. The stillness and spaciousness of winter. The thick, languid days in summer. My family. My home. My love.
In this particular season - as we continue to grapple with covid-19 and are spending more time in our own little worlds - I need this loving reminder to love right where I am over and over again.

Lyrics:
As she sits under the windowsill
watching floating leaves take flight
memories of longer days drift by
now the evenings enter
softly as a whisper
promises of ample time to daydream
relax your mind, she hears the cool wind say
take your time
there’s time for wonder
take it slow
move with the seasons and you’ll know
it’s all here
life is full
learn to love right where you are
